The Steel Guide

Building on a project from the previous year, this character is an experimental stop motion puppet made from metal and aluminium wire. Using steel recycled from an old metal work project I wanted to see how far I could push the materials in order to build up the character’s form. Standing at roughly 13 inches tall I built each piece separately by cutting, bending and stick welding the steel together leaving space for the aluminium wire to connect it all together at the end. By lowering the power on the stick welder I found I could drag it along the surfaces of the steel

using a stick welder and various cutting tools.

As I enjoy the creative process of limiting myself with specific materials and process I kept using 3mm sheet steel and steel bar recycled from a metal set created for a previous project. , I wanted to see how far I could push the materials

Standing at roughly 13 inches tall its built with aluminium wire running through it connected to the steel with epoxy putty.

I used simplistic shapes when planning to give myself more creative freedom when it came to physically making it.
