The batsford prize 2025

Following this years theme of “Fun and Play” I created a series of images entered under the collective title of “Off Shift”. I wanted to depict two robots, who look to have been built for an unspecified purpose, simply taking time to relax as we would in our busy lives.

Each robot is made from mostly the same parts. Their bodies are made from aluminium wire combined with epoxy resin in order to make them as posable as I would need for this project and the base for their heads being plug sections from an old multiplug that I thought already resembled a skull like robotic head. Once I got their basic skeletons down, I used scrap plastic and pieces from an old model kit to add in more detail and character. An important part of their design was to make sure you could tell they were the same type of robot but also make sure they each had enough unique details so you could imagine a more dynamic relationship between them. Once they were built I primed them and used a metallic silver spray paint along with a dry brush and a few details.
